The Mattagami Region Conservation Authority (MRCA) is responsible for regulating development in natural hazard areas to protect people, property, and the environment from damage caused by flooding and erosion. In partnership with the City of Timmins, MRCA has recently completed updates to the regulatory flood hazard mapping for the City of Timmins.
These updated floodplain maps improve the accuracy of flood risk information and help homeowners, developers, and the municipality make informed decisions related to land use planning, infrastructure design, flood protection, and emergency preparedness.
Public Open House
Draft flood hazard maps will be presented at a public open house. MRCA staff will be available to explain the mapping updates, answer questions, and receive public comments.
Date: Tuesday, January 27, 2026
Time: 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Location: Mattagami Region Conservation Authority office, 100 Lakeshore Road, Timmins, ON
About the Mapping Update
This project was completed with support from the City of Timmins and grant funding from the Flood Hazards Identification and Mapping Program (FHIMP).
The floodplain mapping update builds on previous studies completed in 2013 and most recently updated in 2019. It incorporates the latest Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data, allowing for a more accurate representation of current topographic conditions. Climate change is contributing to more frequent and intense storm events, making up-to-date and precise flood hazard mapping increasingly important.
The goals of the mapping update are to:
- Improve the accuracy of floodplain boundaries using LiDAR-derived digital elevation models
- Identify changes in topography related to development, erosion, and land-use modifications
- Provide updated flood hazard maps to support land-use planning, infrastructure development, and emergency response
Accurate data is essential to help predict flooding, mitigate risk, and improve flood warning and emergency planning.
Providing Comments
The deadline to submit comments on the draft floodplain mapping is Friday, January 30, 2026.
Residents are encouraged to attend the open house or provide feedback by emailing [email protected].
